We Are Not Our Own - 1208 Words

Enide Sifrain Professor Stewart English 1102 29 October 2014 We are not our own The story â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. he describes how the world would be enforced by the system of our government. This system the government imposes how to rule the minds of each civilian by diminishing their intellectual brains with handicap devices. The government wants everyone to be equal to each other and if one was more intelligent than the others they had to be labeled with a handicap device. If one is really smart it is considered a crime and maybe be locked away from the world and society. This kind of intelligent is too powerful and this individual may corrupt others and possible the world. If anyone had above-average intelligence they were chained down with a handicap device. If one is physically strong with powerful strength they must wear weights ar ound their necks. If one is smart or intelligent they wore a mental handicap radio in their ear. If one is physically attractive they wore hideous mask to cover their face. These devices are required by law to be worn at all times and should be never taken off. . George and Hazel have a son and his name is Harrison Bergeron in which the story is named after him. Harrison is what the Handicapper General calls a nuance to society because he is above smarter than the others. â€Å"He is much intelligent, more physically capable and better looking than the rest of the society, and even though he is only 14, he is imposed as a treat.† (Mowery Online). He plots to overturn the government. The Handicapped Government locks him up in jail and straps him with handicapped devices that weighed over three hundred pounds in order to tame him from the world. Harrison did not want to be considered average or equal like everybody else. Later on he escapes out of jail with all of these handicapped devices on him and he enters this dance studio. There was a performance going on with ballerinas. These ballerinas wore handicapped devices as well because of their ability to be able to dance beautifully on their toes. He yelled
